Vintage Plates

I've shared before that I collect antique plates. See Here and Here for more on my plate collection. I had some spare time and began browsing pretty vintage plates on the web and Pinterest. I think it would be so awesome to use a mix and match of vintage plates for a summer garden wedding. In fact, I would love to do that for my future wedding. Here are some pretty ones I've found on the web for a little inspiration/ eye candy for the weekend.

I just love the look of mismatched vintage china. It's so charming and would be such a fun way to add sentimental value and personality to an event. I even stumbled upon this site called Dishie Rentals - They rent out gorgeous vintage dishes like these:
So pretty, and such a cool idea. Although renting is an option, I think it would be so much fun to go antique shopping and just start collecting pretty plates to use for an event like a wedding. You will always have that keepsake of those dishes, and they will be even more meaningful because you hand-picked them all.

Painted Pot and New Flowers

Happy first day of Summer! We've had an awesome week of weather (today not included - it's rainy here). This week has flown by, despite work everyday. Last night we ate vegetarian sloppy Joe's for dinner, and I took my first dip in the pool this year! Then I painted a flower pot, planted my new flowers, and watched the movie Wanderlust for the first time. (Hilarious!) But it was a nice relaxing night and the weather was perfect.

And surprise, surprise - I got more new flowers. Petunias of course! Those are the only things I can keep alive in my pots. :) Here they are before I planted them:

Here's how my clay pot turned out that I painted last night:

I'm always looking for new ways to add some bright color to the front porch! So this was a really easy project with a few cheap supplies I picked up at Wal-mart:
The pot was under $2, and the bottles of craft paint were about 96 cents each I think.

I painted the bottom section with the more green color of paint, then decided to paint the top section with the turquoise color. I painted a little on the inside rim area, since that part would show a little bit once the dirt is in there. Of course it didn't have to be perfect, since the dirt would go almost to the top:

I think it turned out pretty spiffy!

Did you notice my little owl stake peeking out of that big blue pot in the center? I love that little guy! I got him at Target earlier this year. I picked up that bright yellow pot recently, too. It was under $2 at Wal-Mart.

So just another small ounce of color added to the porch this week. I'm hoping the weather is nicer tomorrow so I can head back to the pool :) Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

It's a Hoot

This weekend, I received the ultimate. owl. figurine. collection. Haha. No, really. Most of you know I love owls and sort of collect them (mostly those of the ceramic and adorable variety). Here's some of those little guys I have laying around.

Well, my aunt must have found out I have a thing for owls, and very generously gave me a collection of vintage-y owl figurines:
I know- motherload, right?? I have to say, these guys are pretty darn charming. Probably don't have a place for them...but I might be able to make them work! I haven't decided whether to leave them all au-natural, or spray them with some glossy paint for a more modern look. Kinda like these:

What do you think?  I'd hate to lose all that character and old, vintagey feeling that they have already. But I don't want them to look too tacky. Any outside opinions out there?

Either way, these owl figurines are pretty darn awesome. I took them home and set them all up on one of the end tables in the living room, and Trent walked in and just said something like, "ummm.....No." Haha.

We'll see what the fate of these guys will be....

More Abstract Painting Adventures

I'm back with some more adventures in abstract painting! As you might know, I'm a beginner and have been just been doing it as a fun hobby. My first couple attempts didn't go so well..(I think I might be painting over those). Anyway, I had one more canvas I had been wanting to paint - a small, square 10" x 10" one. Here's how it ended up:

I didn't get any photos of the process - I guess I was too consumed in my work! ;) But I snapped a couple right after it was finished:

Horrible lighting, I know. I painted it last night after I got home from my parents' house. It was another quick one. I like to do the whole spontaneous, see-where-it-ends up type of painting instead of planning it all out (composition, color, etc.). I just kind of went with the flow.

Here are some better close-up photos I took today in better lighting - you can see the texture and true colors a lot better:

My inspiration for this painting was Emily Rickard, one of my favorite artists right now. If you haven't seen her work yet, you definitely need to check it out! Here are a few examples of her paintings:

Mine is definitely beginner's work, but I kind of like this one and would like to paint more in this style, too.

Oh yeah, and I'm calling this one Miss America. :)
